My research is focused on uncovering the mechanisms and development of new therapies for the cerebrovascular diseases including brain vascular malformations, stroke, and cognitive dysfunction.

I am a Professor in the Department of Anesthesia at the University of California San Francisco. I am an experienced molecular and cellular biologist, has a long-term record in conducting cerebrovascular and cardiovascular research. My laboratory has developed the first brain arteriovenous malformation (bAVM) model in adult mouse that have true AVM lesions in the brain. Founded by the National Institute of Health (NIH) of USA and other Funding agents, my research over the past 19 years focus on studying pathogenesis and developing new therapies for bAVM, ischemic stroke, and cognitive dysfunction. I serve in editorial board of many scientific journals and reviews grants for NIH, American Heart Association, US Department of Defense.

I graduated from Nanjing Medical University in 1982. I undertook a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at University of California, San Francisco in 1989. I joined the faculty at University of California, San Francisco in 1996 and led a group developing gene and cell-based therapies for cancer, myocardial infarction and ischemic limb diseases. I was recruited to the Center for Cerebrovascular Research in 2008. Since then, my research is focused on identifying disease mechanisms and developing new therapies for cerebrovascular diseases and ischemic stroke. Currently I am the Associate Director for the Center for Cerebrovascular Research and Vice Chair of UCSF Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.
