Esteban Gonzalez Burchard, MD, MPH
Pharmacogenomics and Genetic Epidemiology of Pulmonary Diseases

Esteban González Burchard received his M.D. degree from Stanford University School of Medicine in 1995. He completed clinical training in Internal Medicine at Harvard's Brigham and Women's Hospital and Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine training at UCSF. Dr. González Burchard also completed clinical research training at the Harvard School of Public Health. He received his M.P.H. degree in epidemiology from UC Berkeley. He joined the UCSF faculty in 2001. Dr. González Burchard directs the UCSF DNA Bank and the Asthma Genetics Laboratory. Dr. González Burchard's major academic interest centers on identifying genetic and environmental risk factors for asthma and drug response (pharmacogenetics) in ethnically diverse populations.

Research Interests

The overall goal of my research group is to identify and characterize the major genetic components that predispose to asthma and modify drug response (pharmacogenetics). Our research focuses on identifying racially-specific genetic and biologic risk factors for asthma and asthma severity among U.S. ethnic and racial minority groups. In addition, we are interested in how race and racially-specific genetic differences modify disease and response to therapies. We work in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team of investigators. This team includes faculty with expertise in genetic epidemiology, biostatistics, clinical asthma, and pulmonary molecular and cell biology and genomics. Using tools from these disciplines, we conduct studies designed to elucidate genetic risk factors for asthma and asthma severity. Our research is applied and through collaborations our work often crosses over to other disease phenotypes. We enjoy collaborations throughout UCSF and outside of UCSF. Within UCSF we are based in the Schools of Pharmacy and Medicine and the Institute for Human Genetics.
