Micro 209. The science of immunological diseases: translating basic research to the clinic.

Course description
This course will discuss the pathogenesis of selected immune-mediated inflammatory diseases, and the clinical features and therapeutic approaches for these diseases. At the end of the course, students are expected to have a better appreciation of: the links between basic immunology and the development of immunological diseases; the application of animal models to understanding disease pathogenesis; modern technologies for studying patients; and the principles underlying rational drug design and development for inflammatory diseases. Students taking this course are expected to have basic knowledge of Immunology.

Components of the course
Sessions will consist of lectures, discussion of seminal papers (in the format of student-run journal clubs), and interviews with patients. Students will be assigned to discuss the journal club papers; these assignments will be handed out on the first day of the course. Please note that it is essential to maintain confidentiality when you interview patients, and to be appropriately respectful of individuals who are willing to share their lives with us. Attendance at all sessions is required; if you are unable to attend a session for some reason, please inform one of the co-directors.

Evaluation
At the end of the course, students will be asked to take an exam that will consist of short essay-type answers and possibly a brief paper on one of several topics to be assigned.
