The San Francisco VAMC has the largest funded research program in the Veterans Health Administration with more than $77 million in annual research expenditures (FY 09). Areas of particular interest are: prostate cancer, aging, oncology, hypertension, stroke, cardiovascular disease, Hepatitis C, breast cancer, PTSD, substance abuse, neuroscience disease, health services research, and advanced medical imaging.

The VAMC is located across Golden Gate Park from the Parnassus Heights campus.
